Week 1: Free Inquiry

“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.”

-Aristotle

Introduction to My Inquiry

As I detailed on my “About Me” page, my free inquiry project will journal the weight-loss and lifestyle changes I hope to make over the next 12 weeks. I am actively trying to get away from dieting, or just working out for the sake of weight loss. I want to build new habits, and live life actively even beyond reaching my goals. Each week, I will update my progress, and will introduce and discuss a different aspect of health and fitness. In no particular order, I have the following topics in mind:

  • My fitness tracker/smart watch
  • Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis(BIA) instead of BMI
  • Workout Metrics
  • Scheduling/Accountability
  • Sleep Schedule
  • Water Intake
  • Meditation/Mindfulness
  • Oculus Rift VR workouts
  • Supplements
  • Useful apps
  • Wrap up – Pic a day montage

Baseline Measurements

As I write this post, I’ve been on my journey for three weeks (December 27th to January 17th). In that time, my measurements for overall weight, BMI, fat mass, body fat % have decreased.

Currently, they are as follows:
Weight: 259lbs/117.5kg
BMI: 37.2
Fat Mass: 92.8lbs*
Body Fat %: 35.8%*
Skeletal Muscle: 89.6lbs*
Chest: 49″
Waist: 46″
Across stomach: 53″

*Approximate, according to Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis.

The measurements I plan to update weekly are my Weight, BMI, Fat Mass, Body Fat %, and Skeletal Muscle. In weeks 5, 8, and 12, I will also update the new measurements for chest, waist, and stomach. Each week, I will also include one photo with the weight in the corner. At the end of the 12 weeks, I will put all the photos together, with additional photos, in a montage to physically show the differences in my body over the 12 weeks. Since my photos will be shirtless, I will place the weekly photo on a separate page linked here.
